Intent:

Reading is of key importance and is at the heart of our curriculum: we want every child at Westhouses Primary School to love books.  Each classroom has an inviting reading area and our library is at the heart of the school. The children are welcome to browse here to find a book to enjoy. In phonics we ensure that we follow a validated scheme using a consistent and structured approach to support a smooth transition as children gain skills and progress through the stages.

Our EYFS and KS1 children are taught phonics & reading through Little Wandle -  https://www.littlewandlelettersandsounds.org.uk/

Little Wandle creates resources that support both staff and parents. Below is an outline of the Little Wandle Phonics Overview.

Readers are encouraged to predict events, extend their vocabulary, compare, contrast and comment, retrieve information from what they have read and prepare summaries.
